Summer’s Encore

By ‘C’:

What a promising start to the next day in our life!

Apparently it had rained (cold rain too!) on another well-known Green-Gym group when they turned up on Saturday to this site.  Today the forecast was for unbroken sunshine and temperatures up to 20 C.

The task was one well known to most of us here: to clear the water channels of assorted vegetation which so likes the environment of a crystal-clear Chilterns chalk stream that it will – if not checked – rapidly grow to the point where the chalk-stream has nowhere to go.  And so ceases to be a crystal-clear stream.

There was certainly plenty to do.  At start of play, the ‘waterfall’ over the weir was a mere trickle.

To work then!  With different implements and techniques depending on target species and personal preference of volunteers:

The weather so lived up to its early promise that many Green-Gymmers reverted to shirt-sleeve order:

Was it worth it?  Well apart from the fact that we had a good day out, here is visual and audible proof of the effect of our labours:

Before: There’s a stream here?

After: That’s better!
[And will have been running perfectly clear again by 2 this afternoon.

First thing this morning
By session end
